- robots.txt check
- Firewall and CDN
- Buyer prompt log

To show up in ChatGPT, first make sure your website lets OpenAI’s search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, reach it, in both robots.txt and your firewall. Then say plainly who you serve, where and what you do, and test the prompts your buyers type. OpenAI says placement isn’t guaranteed, so treat anyone who promises it with caution.
Key takeaways
- OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.” Check that first.
- Your firewall or CDN must also allow OpenAI’s published search crawler IP addresses, not just robots.txt.
- Search and training are separate settings. You can allow OAI-SearchBot and still block GPTBot.
- Plain pages that name your service, your area and who you help are easier to cite.
- OpenAI’s own help page says “Placement is not guaranteed.” Nobody can sell you a guaranteed mention.
How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT?
Start with access, then clarity. Allow OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt and make sure your host or CDN doesn’t block OpenAI’s published crawler IP addresses. Then make sure your key pages say in plain text what you do, who it’s for and where you work. Finally, test real buyer prompts and note who gets cited.
Most owners start at the wrong end. They hear a competitor got named in ChatGPT and go shopping for a tool. The first question is cheaper: can ChatGPT’s search crawler read your site at all?

Four checks, one afternoon
- Let OAI-SearchBot in. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for “OAI-SearchBot” or a blanket “Disallow: /”.
- Check your firewall or CDN. Ask your host whether bot protection blocks OpenAI’s searchbot IP list.
- Say it plainly. Your homepage and service pages should name the service, the city or region and the customer in normal sentences.
- Test buyer prompts. Ask ChatGPT (with Search on) the five questions your customers ask. Write down who it cites.
How do I get indexed by ChatGPT?
There’s no form to submit. OpenAI’s help page says that to make a site eligible, you allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl it and confirm your host or CDN allows traffic from OpenAI’s published searchbot IP addresses. After a robots.txt change, OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours for its search systems to adjust.
That’s the whole technical requirement OpenAI publishes. If someone tells you there’s a secret “ChatGPT index” you can pay to get into, ask them to show you where OpenAI says so.
What is OAI-SearchBot, and is my site blocking it?
OAI-SearchBot is the crawler OpenAI uses to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search features. OpenAI says sites opted out of it “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers,” though they can still appear as navigational links. Your site is blocking it if robots.txt disallows it by name or disallows all bots, or if your firewall drops its requests.

Here’s what each line means in practice:
robots.txt lines and ChatGPT search
| robots.txt line | What it does for ChatGPT search |
|---|---|
User-agent: *Disallow: (empty) | Allows all bots, including OAI-SearchBot |
User-agent: *Disallow: / | Blocks everything, including OAI-SearchBot |
User-agent: OAI-SearchBotDisallow: / | Blocks ChatGPT search by name |
User-agent: GPTBotDisallow: / | Opts out of model training only; search is a separate setting |
Robots.txt isn’t the only gate. Many hosts and security plugins block “AI bots” with one checkbox. OpenAI recommends allowing requests from its published IP ranges (listed at openai.com/searchbot.json), so ask whoever runs your hosting to check.
QUICK CHECK: Type your domain plus /robots.txt into a browser right now. If you see “Disallow: /” under “User-agent: *” or under “OAI-SearchBot,” ChatGPT search can’t use your pages. That’s a one-line fix for whoever manages your site.
Can I block AI training but still appear in ChatGPT search?
Yes. OpenAI says each crawler setting is independent. You can allow OAI-SearchBot so your site can appear in search results, and disallow GPTBot to signal that your content shouldn’t be used to train its foundation models. If you allow both, OpenAI says it may use one crawl for both purposes to avoid crawling twice.
This matters if you hold content you’d rather not feed into training, like detailed guides you sell. If your business handles confidential data, our guide to whether ChatGPT is safe for business covers the other side: what your team types into it.
Can someone guarantee my business gets recommended by ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI’s help page says ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors and that “Placement is not guaranteed.” ChatGPT also rewrites your buyer’s question into its own search queries, sometimes using partner search providers. Anyone promising a guaranteed mention is promising something OpenAI itself doesn’t.
What you can control is whether your pages are reachable and whether they answer the question clearly. OpenAI’s example: a question about restaurants near me, asked from San Francisco, may be rewritten as “top restaurants San Francisco.” If your page never says the city you serve, it’s harder to match that rewritten query.

A simple buyer-prompt log: write five prompts your customers would type, such as “best IT security company for small law firms in Broward County.” Run each one with Search on, once a month. Note the sources cited, and whether you’re one of them. Then compare your page to the ones that were cited. Do they answer the question in the first paragraph? Do they name the area?
This is the same work that helps you in Google. Our guide to ranking in AI search covers Google, Bing and Perplexity too, and GEO vs AEO vs SEO explains why most of it is still good SEO.
How to show up in ChatGPT: frequently asked questions
How long after I fix robots.txt will ChatGPT notice?
OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its search systems to adjust. That’s only the crawler setting, though. Whether your pages then get cited depends on how well they answer the question compared with other sources, and OpenAI says placement isn’t guaranteed. Recheck your buyer prompts a week or two later.
What is the difference between OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and ChatGPT-User?
OAI-SearchBot crawls for ChatGPT’s search features. GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI’s foundation models. ChatGPT-User visits a page when a person’s request in ChatGPT triggers it, and OpenAI says it isn’t used to decide what appears in search. Manage search opt-outs with OAI-SearchBot.
Do I need an llms.txt file to show up in ChatGPT?
OpenAI’s crawler and search help pages don’t list an llms.txt file as a requirement. What they do list is allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and letting OpenAI’s published IP addresses through your host or CDN. Get those two right first. An llms.txt file is optional, and nothing OpenAI publishes says it improves your placement.
Does my Google ranking affect ChatGPT?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes sends rewritten queries to partner search providers, and its help page links Microsoft’s privacy statement among them. It doesn’t publish exactly how results are ranked. In practice, clear pages that do well in regular search tend to be the ones worth citing, which is why basic SEO still matters.
Can a small business really show up in ChatGPT?
Yes, if your site is reachable and your pages answer the specific question a buyer asks. Big brands win broad questions. Small businesses have a better shot at specific ones that name a service, a customer type and an area. Write for those questions, keep the answers short and near the top, and test monthly.
