Every founder hears “looks great” from friends and co-founders. That doesn’t help when an investor closes your deck on slide three. According to DocSend’s pre-seed pitch deck guide (updated February 24, 2026), investors spend an average of 4 minutes and 10 seconds evaluating a pre-seed deck. A review tells you, before that happens, where a reader gets lost.

How does the free pitch deck review work?

It takes four steps, and the first three are free and self-serve:

What does a pitch deck review check?

A useful pitch deck review reads your deck the way an investor skims it, then asks whether each slide makes one clear point. It checks that the story flows from problem to solution to proof, that your numbers are specific and agree from slide to slide, and that the ask explains what the money will get you.

It’s also a test of clarity. Y Combinator’s seed deck guide says founders “should strive for clarity and concision”, and Sequoia’s pitch guide starts by asking you to define your company “in a single declarative sentence.”

What should a good pitch deck include?

A good pitch deck covers about ten core topics, one point per slide. Here’s the order Y Combinator’s seed template uses:

What do investors look for in a pitch deck?

Investors look for a clear company in one line, a real problem, proof that it’s working, a market big enough to matter, a team suited to the problem, and a specific ask. Early on, much of that comes down to whether they believe the team can deliver.

For the plain-English version by stage, read what investors look for at pre-seed and seed. If you’re building a product, investors may also ask about your tech and security. Our pre-seed tech and security checklist covers what to have in place.

How do you get honest feedback on a pitch deck?

Use more than one kind of reader. Start with a free pitch deck score from Sophia to find the biggest gaps fast. Then ask someone outside your industry to read it (if they get lost, a busy investor will too). Last, talk to a founder who has raised recently, or to an advisor who can go through the deck with you slide by slide.
